Nexus Talk – Online Safety

The internet and digital technologies have become an integral part of pupil’s lives and when used effectively they are powerful and engaging resources.  Young people are connected to the internet and to each other via mobile phones, twitter, online gaming and social networking sites. Although this offers many positive opportunities there are also risks, for example cyber bullying.

On Friday 9th November Orlaigh McKenna, Development Worker at Nexus, delivered 3 sessions on Online Safety.  Session one was targeted at Year 12 students, session two for years 8 & 9 and session three for years 10 & 11.  She covered a range of topics including privacy settings, private and public information sharing -being responsible for what you write, cyber bullying, false profiles and reporting.  The overall aim was to increase awareness of issues concerning online safety and encourage pupils to adopt safe and responsible behaviours when using the internet and other technologies.
