School Bank

4th Nov 2011

School Bank

We are pleased to announce that our School Bank re-opened on

Monday 24th October 2011!

The bank, set up in conjunction with the Northern Bank, is open to all pupils who wish to begin a savings account and develop the routine of regularly saving and managing their money.  This is the second year this initiative has been running, and it has been a good success with over 60 pupils having opened accounts last year.

The School Bank is operated by 6 staff, who are all Year 12 Business Studies pupils, overseen by Mrs Budde and supported by staff at the Northern Bank.  In order to secure their positions working in the bank these pupils had to apply for the position and undergo an interview with Lisa Lavery, the bank manager of Northern Bank in Rathfriland and Mrs Budde.  Working at the bank will allow these pupils to develop valuable skills in handling money, customer service, team work, marketing and decision making to name but a few.

Mrs Lindsey McCallister, Student Officer at Northern Bank in Banbridge, held an assembly on Friday 21st October 2011 to provide all pupils with information about joining the School Bank.

The Bank is located in Room 14.

It will be open every Monday lunch time (12.40-1.15pm).

At the bank pupils can open a new Discovery Account for 11-17 year olds and receive an introduction pack.  They can also deposit their money in school knowing that it will be handled carefully and confidentially, however, no withdrawals from school, only at a branch or ATM.  The staff can help pupils to access their E-banking facility and answer queries.

How to open an account

  •      If you’d like to open an account, see one of the staff for an Expression of Interest Form
  •      Get your parent/guardian to sign this form
  •      Visit the school bank to receive your application form (one of the members of staff will explain how to complete the form if you need them to)
  •      Give the completed application form to a staff member at the school bank and await account information to be sent to your home address.

So what do I have to do as a parent?

  •      All you will be required to do is to sign the Expression of Interest form when your child takes it home.
  •      Encourage your child to save.

 Overall benefits for pupils:

  •       A quick and easy way of opening an account
  •       An ability to appreciate the benefits of saving
  •       A young saving history
  •       Interest on all money paid in
  •       Take responsibility and learn how to manage their money
  •       It is a genuine account- so when they leave school they can still use it.

If you have any questions relating to the School Bank please contact Mrs Budde or visit the School Bank which is open very Monday.

Remember to use your Bank- it's a great opportunity,

so make the most of it!
