Environmental Youth Speak is an environmental competition aimed at school children across the Banbridge District. The aim of the competition is to encourage children to think about the issues of waste and recycling. Banbridge District Council organises the local competition on behalf of the Southern Waste Management Partnership (SWAMP).
During the 2013 Youth Speak competition, pupils were invited to speak for 3 to 5 minutes on the following topic: The True Cost of Waste. Rathfriland High School English Department selected two pupils to participate in this event.
Emma Frazer 10A1 and James Boyd 10A1 represented Rathfriland High School in this year’s competition. Both pupils gave a very convincing speech on the issue, but it was Emma Frazer who fought off stiff competition from Newbridge Integrated College and Banbridge Academy to scoop the senior title. Emma received a prize and all pupils taking part in the competition received a certificate and a goodie bag.
Emma will now go on to represent the District at regional level by competing with the winners from six other council areas within the southern area.
