The Year 11 Geography class, annual fieldtrip to the River Shimna
The Year 11 Geography class, accompanied by Mrs Tumilty and Mr Barron, went out on the annual fieldtrip to the River Shimna on Tuesday 2nd June. The weather the previous day was extremely wet and there was a dull and cold start up at the first site near Spelga Dam. Some rain came in at Site 2, however, the group persevered and for the first time waders were needed at this site due to the high water levels from the heavy rain the day before. A special mention must go to Susanne McCabe, Benjamin Murphy and Faye Porter who donned the waders to get the velocity and depth readings at this and the remaining sites. They got very wet at Site 4 in Newcastle when the heavens literally opened, while the rest of the class took shelter under the bridge!
The group collected all of the necessary information by early afternoon which meant time for some lunch in Newcastle. The class are now excited at the prospect of analysing and interpreting the data as part of their Controlled Assessment for GCSE Geography!
