Year 11 attend Stock Market Challenge Event
Five year 11 GCSE Business Studies students made their way to Abby Grammar School, Newry on Friday 4th March to compete in the Southern Region, Stock Market Challenge Event. The team got the opportunity to experience the excitement of dealing on a live trading floor, making decisions under pressure and taking calculated risks.
The challenge lasted the whole day but simulated live trading taking place over a week. They were given a portfolio of shares to the value of £21,000. The team had to be responsive to the quick changes in the markets. They had to look at information from various sources including newspaper, TV and radio and use their knowledge and judgement to decide on where best to invest their money.
Each member of the team had to fulfil a certain role:
The Rathfriland High School team was:
Chloe Megaw – Finance Manager
Zara Croizer – Investment Analyst
Georgina Thompson – Media Analyst
Emma McCallister– Floor Trader Buyer
Ellie Heenan – Floor Trader Seller
This was an enjoyable and rewarding challenge that gave the pupils an insight into career opportunities within the financial services sector and helped them develop important skills such as communication, problem-solving and working with others.
