YEAR 12 HISTORY FIELD TRIP 2008
On Wednesday 1st October, the final year GCSE history class went to Grey Point Fort, Co Down, for their educational visit. In school the class had been studying Northern Ireland’s role in the Second World War as part of the GCSE history course. Grey Point Fort was a coastal defence installation and its purpose was to defend Belfast Lough against a possible German invasion. The pupils were able to investigate the site and learn about the role of the fort and the functions of the different buildings such as the Battery, the Gun Emplacements and the Magazine. The pupils were provided with a site map and worksheet which enabled them to find out about the significant part played by Northern Ireland during the Second World War. Information boards, located at various points around the fort, were used by the class to help them complete their worksheets. Overall, the visit enabled the pupils to appreciate the role played by Northern Ireland in the Second World War and the contribution it made to the war effort from 1939 - 1945.
